Samoan mats made from Pandanus
Fala is general term used when describing the Pandanus tree or mats.
The leaves of the tree used for mats are laufala, laupaogo, and lau'ie.
Laufala and laupaogo are floor mats also refered to as papa, papa laufala, and papa laupaogo.
Laufala are the popular sleeping mats (fala moe) . Elaborate and high ranking sleeping mats were called 'ie moega from these came fala su'i which are used today as decorative mats for beds and are often distributed at weddings.
